Charity auction to benefit ARA Foundation
01/03/2014

Items up for bid include a variety of trips

Each year at The Rental Show, the ARA Foundation Charity Auction and Reception provides an opportunity to be the highest bidder and help those in the rental industry at the same time. The eighth annual auction will be held 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., after the show floor closes for the day.

Attendees can enjoy appetizers and drinks, and participate in fast-paced bidding at the live auction conducted by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. The selection of more than 30 auction items includes a variety of trips, including a Walt Disney World® vacation package from The Toro Co., a three-night “Winter Wonderland” Colorado ski vacation from Tiresocks, the Shuttle 4X four-seat utility vehicle from Cushman, a reproduction Tokheim 36B gas pump from General Equipment Co., the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona International Speedway from Ditch Witch and a one-week stay at a Gulf Coast condo in the Florida Panhandle by AirPac.

This auction helps raise money for the ARA Foundation programs, such as the Foundation Scholarship Program, the Disaster Relief and Recovery Programs, the Young Professionals Program and the Rental Advisory Program.

The ARA Foundation awarded more than $62,000 in scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year. This year, there is $68,000 worth of ARA Foundation and affiliate scholarships available for the 2014-2015 school year to be awarded to students who want to build careers in the equipment rental industry.

This past year, the Foundation contributed $10,000 in disaster relief funding following tornadoes in Illinois, wild fires in Arizona, and flooding in Colorado and Alberta, Canada.

The ARA of Arizona donated $500, matched by the ARA Foundation, to the local 100 Club, when wildfires devastated vast areas of Arizona in June, killing 19 firefighters. The Canadian Rental Association and ARA Foundation donated $1,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help with efforts following the worst flooding in history in Alberta, Canada. When word reached others about the effort, the initial donation grew to $5,000. The ARA of Illinois and the ARA Foundation also came together to donate $1,500 to the Washington, Ill., Rotary Club Foundation for tornado relief efforts, following the devastating storms in November. In addition, the ARA of Colorado and ARA Foundation donated $3,500 to flood relief efforts in Colorado.

“The flooding impacted so many people in Colorado on so many different levels. Communities have been devastated. Luckily, most of our member rental businesses were not severely impacted, but their employees, customers and communities have been,” says Catherine DeBusk, CERP, vice president of Party People Rentals in Phoenix, who serves as chair of the ARA Foundation board of trustees. “The ARA Foundation is here to help our members and the communities they serve, and is glad to be able to offer this outreach in these types of disaster situations.”

Last year, the ARA Foundation raised $81,150 from the live charity auction during the Reception With a Purpose, while $7,600 was contributed at the ARA Resource Center. In addition, $5,325 was donated through registrations for The Rental Show to make the grand total of show-related contributions $94,075 for The Rental Show 2013.

“The generosity of the people in the equipment rental industry is simply amazing,” says Jenni Venema, ARA Foundation director of development, ARA Foundation, and ARA director of association programs. “The ARA Foundation has been able to help in natural disasters, provide funds for students to attend college, build the connections of young professionals in our industry and offer advice to those who ask. The donations allow the ARA Foundation to continue to enhance our programs that offer help and support to those in need and to look at ways to continue to give back to the industry.”

The ARA Foundation Charity Auction is sponsored by Atlas Copco Construction Equipment, Bartell Morrison USA, Chicago Pneumatic Construction Equipment, Kubota Tractor Corp. and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. Allied Financial Solutions, a financing company that exhibits at The Rental Show, is offering six-months-same-as-cash financing for auction items.

You will need a bid number to attend the reception. You can register for your bid number at Registration, at the ARA Member Resource Center/ARA Foundation Kiosk, at Booth No. 2769, at the Ritchie Bros. Booth No. 4519, or at the reception.

This event will be followed by ARA’s Big Splash at SeaWorld®, starting at 7:15 p.m. Shuttle buses will be provided from the convention center and all show hotels to and from the event.
